Add Natural Stone to Your Kitchen Design

add stone to kitchen design

No matter what your budget or your design style is, there’s a natural stone option that can add a little something different to your kitchen.

Natural stone designs also stand the test of time and are pretty much universally appealing to prospective buyers. It’s a great choice whether you are remodeling for resale or whether you plan to stick around to enjoy your new kitchen.

Stone Countertops

Granite countertops have become all the rage over the past few years, but other types of natural stones like marble and quartz are also great options for the kitchen. All of these materials are durable and can make your kitchen stand out.

In fact, marble is available in a wide variety of colors and has even more customization options than granite. Marble is also very heat resistant and can stand up to even the hottest pots and pans in the kitchen. However, you’ll want to make sure that you apply a sealant to it immediately after installation to prevent spills from seeping into its porous surface.

Nothing says you have to stick with the same countertop material throughout your kitchen, so you may opt for another material on your main cooking area and use marble as an accent for a unique look.

Stone Backsplash

While countertops utilize large pieces of stone, backsplashes use much smaller pieces combined into a mosaic style. This allows for nearly endless combinations of colors and styles. Browse options online or work with an interior designer to create something that matches your style.

Stone backsplashes are also very affordable. Prices range from $4 to $8 per square foot. You’ll want to factor in additional cost for installation, as most stone backsplashes are not DIY-friendly.

Stone Flooring

Natural stone floors can be used in just about any room of your home, including the kitchen. They are extremely durable and even help keep allergens at bay. If you have stone tile on your patio or other outdoor space, continuing it into the kitchen provides a nice synergy between indoor and outdoor spaces.

However, stone can become slippery when it is wet, so be sure to clean up any spills in the kitchen as soon as possible or consider adding a rug or mat near the sink to catch excess water.
