Basalt is a famously reliable stone, both in terms of design and durability. It is a simple dark gray, with a relatively consistent color throughout. There may be a slight shade difference within each tile, adding to its natural stone effect. There is no evidence of pattern or veining, making it an ideal stone for those who want uniformity.
Its hardwearing nature comes from its geology. As an igneous rock, Basalt is formed when hot magma bursts through the earth’s crust and cools rapidly. This facilitates the forming of small crystals throughout the stone, creating the effect of a mid-sized grain. Whilst it is naturally porous, due to its tiny holes, once the stone is sealed it becomes fairly stain resistant and incredibly durable. This makes it ideal for use in almost any area of the home, including bathrooms where water is likely to occur and high-traffic areas such as hallways and kitchens. Basalt can even be used for exterior applications such as garden patios and walls.
